What's Up Wednesday

It's time for What's Up Wednesday, a weekly meme run by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow. Here's what I've been up to this past week!

What I'm reading

I've been super-busy with freelance work and critiquing, so I haven't had much time for reading this week. But I ordered my copy of Ensnared by A. G. Howard, the last in her Splintered trilogy, so I'm looking forward to reading that!

I did read Victoria Schwab's short story, Leave the Window Open, which I loved. Next on the list is Firefight by Brandon Sanderson.

What I'm writing

Alliance Book 5! All the words! I'm at over 30K already, but I kind of cheated a bit because I wrote about 6000 words of this in November when I was supposed to be working on my NaNoWriMo book. :P But let's face it, I'm addicted to this series. I'm at that borderline-obsessive stage again where I'm wandering about not really paying attention to the real world because I'm thinking about the plot all the time.

My writing goal this week: More words on Alliance 5!

What works for me

Being insanely busy. It's weird, but I seem to get more work done the more I have going on. The months where I'm juggling a ton of freelance work, critiquing, and other things outside of writing are also the months when my wordcount is highest. I think it's because typically, I want to write whenever I'm supposed to be doing something else.  :P

What else is new

Freelance work is back in full swing, and I'm working on some exciting projects! Other than that, various self-publishing-related things (eeeep!). Driving myself crazy trying to learn formatting. My street team have already seen the cover and blurb for Adamant, and a cover reveal/pre-order promo is coming later this month! Sign-ups are open here. :)

  1. That's so true about wanting to write when you should be doing something else. I'm the same way.

My son just picked up Brandon Sanderson's first book in that series, STEELHEART. It looks like a fun series, so I might have to give it a shot sometime too.

Have a great week working on Alliance Book #5! :)

  2. I finally jumped on the Brandwagon earlier this week and bought myself a copy of Steelheart - I'm looking forward to seeing the Sanderson hype for myself!

Best of luck with Book 5, it sounds like you're powering through this series! :)

  3. 81k in one month is astonishing. Good luck with all the work you've got to do :)

  4. Being insanely busy works for you? When I'm insanely busy, like lately, I can't find a moment (or the motivation) to write.

  5. I'm late to the game and just started Steelheart. Really enjoying it so far, so the sequel won't be far behind. I could shed a few busy pounds. :)

  6. There might be something to this productivity when otherwise busy thing. I find that I waste WAY more time on meaningless stuff when I have a bunch of free time at my disposal. When I'm under pressure or have very little time, I tend to get more done. Sounds like you're just motoring along on your WiP. Hope this is another great writing week! :D

  7. You're already on book five in a series? WAH. That's amazing! Good luck writing.

  8. Awesome stuff. I hear you about being productive when you're busy. I'm totally the same way, although I'm trying to cut back right now...with the baby on the way. Too much stress is a bad idea.

  10. Here's to hoping you ride that motivation wave with your Alliance series! I love that feeling.

  11. 81k in December! Holy cow! I'm completely the opposite of you. The busier I get, the more my writing tends to slide, although I always manage to do everything else on my gigantic to-do list.

  12. Street teams, huh? I would love to have you talk about how that works for you. I had a publicist start to put one together for me, but we parted ways before it really went anywhere, and I promptly forgot all about it. Have a great week!

  13. I don't know how you do it. Just reading about everything on your plate exhausts me. Good luck with everything!

  14. I can't believe you're already on book 5! It doesn't seem that long ago that you started working on book 1 (which I just can't wait for!)
How good was Leave The Window Open?! I loved it :D

  15. I do best when I'm crazy busy too. When there isn't much going on it's like my body goes into hibernation mode.

  16. I guess I need to be busier! That seems to be the theme this week for what works! :)

  17. How exciting you're already writing Alliance 5 while book 1 isn't released yet. Can't wait to read Adamant!
I am currently reading Walking Shadow ;). Just finished the first four chapters and really enjoying it and there was enough recap so I got easily back into the story.

  18. I can relate to doing more when I am busy...I have less dead time to get unfocused, I think. :)

  19. That's so impressive! Being 5 books ahead is just amazing. Take care though. :) I know you don't really get worn out by this sort of thing, but just imagining that sort of workload makes my brain tired!

  20. I'm the same way with getting more done the busier I am. I think maybe it's because when I'm busy, I know I don't have time to procrastinate, but when I'm not busy, I keep putting off my writing until "later"? Anyway, that's awesome that you've got so many words so far!
